Fishing Vessels Much of the commercial success of Berwick Shipyard was derived from building fishing vessels. Here, fishing writer and researcher Graham Toward takes a detailed look at the yard’s output over the years. The first fishing vessel to be built at Berwick Shipyard under the Fairmile ownership was completed in , and was the first of a new design class named the Fair Isle trawlers.
This class was designed to replace older, larger vessels, and had much more economic running costs, and also required a smaller crew, therefore making them popular with owners. For the next few years, the yard was kept fully occupied with these boats, turning them out at a rate of about five a year. Most of these boats were destined for Aberdeen owners, although some worked from Granton, and two were built for England.

The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue gives the etymology of the word golf or gouf with many alternative spellings as probably from the Dutch kolf see Kolven , a Dutch indoor ballgame ; although the dictionary also records the noun golf with alternative spellings golfe or golph as deriving from Middle English golf or goulf or Old French golfe, meaning “a deep pool or hollow; an abyss”; a cognate of modern English gulf.
List of English words of Scots origin Links: The most widely accepted theory is that the modern game of golf originated in Scotland in the High Middle Ages. The first tournament structures developed and competitions were held between various burghs. The modern game was spread by Scots to the rest of the world. The earliest reference to golf is the purchase of a set of golf clubs by James IV from a bowmaker of St Johnston Perth in Where he played is not known, but it is likely to have been on the open ground called the North Inch at Perth.

Search 25 Best Places to Visit in Scotland Occupying the northern third of Great Britain, Scotland draws visitors in with its rich culture, its fascinating history, and the sparkling waters of its many lochs. Forget the stereotypes about tartan and haggis; Scotland is home to a seemingly endless array of unique castles , a host of world-class art and science museums, and some of the largest wilderness areas in Western Europe. Despite the country’s relatively small size, exploring it fully would take most people an entire lifetime.
The region of Aberdeenshire boasts miles of beautiful coastline, including a sandy beach right in the city center. Many of the buildings here are made out of silvery-grey granite that sparkles in the sunshine, which has led to nicknames such as the “Silver City with the Golden Sands. The town is most popular as a base for people looking to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, which have plenty to do all throughout the year.
Skiing and snowboarding are the biggest draw in the winter; the town is located not far from CairnGorm Mountain, the best-known ski hill in the country.
The Weather The skiing is usually located on wide, open moorland with no tree cover. When snow conditions are good, sizable skiable verticals of up to m top to bottom at Nevis Range are possible. But this is terrain more akin to Scandinavian or eastern Canadian: However, it is quite common for a ribbon of snow to be required to make a complete run to the base of the ski slopes and it is equally common for that cover to have heather and rocks poking through, sometimes marked, sometimes not.
In addition, the mountainsides are covered in chestnut paling fencing designed to hold the snow on the slopes and help it build up rather than blow away. These can be a hazard for newcomers, especially when they become partly buried.
The scammers spend their day trolling the dating sites and chat rooms for contact emails, and then send off thousands of fraudulent letters and emails awaiting the victim’s replies.
Many of the photos originally shown here, and some which remain, were taken by him years ago when he was just getting interested into railroad photography and railfanning. Understandably, the quality of some of these older photos is not high. Jones has been travelling around the Carolinas for many years hunting out present and former stations and photographing them.
He has contributed several hundred excellent photos of depots and other railroad structures for this site. Because of the higher quality of digital photography, in some cases, Mr. Jones’ photos have replaced those which originally appeared on this site. Many of these photos depict stations which no longer exist. We also thank Rev. David Carriker for providing his extensive collection of historic depot photographs and Lynn McConnell whose research into the history of North Carolina depots has been an invaluable asset in aiding us to properly identify a number of the photographs on these pages.
Once removed, it looked like a bundle of rags and had to be handled extremely carefully as fragments of the map fell off each time it was moved. On closer examination, it became clear that the canvas backing on the map had survived better than much of the paper itself which had disintegrated in a number of places. This video shows the reaction of staff when the poor condition of the map was revealed: We needed to stabilise it to prevent any further deterioration, make it robust and easier to handle to get to a point where it could be studied by researchers.
It was already splitting along the joins between the sections and the decision was taken to separate the sections to make the map easier to work with.

Sign up to our Daily newsletter Speeding drivers outside Aberdeen schools were stopped at the roadside and told by pupils: The hard-hitting operation was organised by Police Scotland and took place outside three city schools in two days. Officers used speed guns to check how fast drivers were going during the school run in 20mph and 30mph zones. Those who breached the speed limit were pulled over — and given the chance to avoid further action if they spoke with children from the schools about speeding.
All three locations are in Northfield. According to police, 24 drivers stopped for speeding agreed to speak with children and complete traffic surveys. A further 35 drivers were stopped for offences other than speeding. Some refused to do the questionnaire. Keep up to date with the latest news with The Evening Express newsletter Officers seized one car as the driver had no licence, no insurance and no tax. The same person was given advice by police as they had incorrectly secured a child within the vehicle.
Another driver was reported to the procurator fiscal for having no insurance and being disqualified. Police said the purpose of the operation was for drivers to understand that speeding outside schools could kill.
