But, for any Romans using Ermine Street — still largely in use today as the A1 and A14 — during the second to fourth centuries, Durobrivae would have been the town they looked forward to as a rest-stop when they reached this part of the country. In the many millennia since people first settled on the spot, the location eventually to become known as Peterborough has had several different titles. So how did it metamorphose to become the large, vibrant and diverse city it is today? The site must have made an attractive prospect to any early humans seeking a permanent home. By the side of the Nene, at the point where dry land submitted to the marshy Fens, it was a fertile place blessed with natural abundant food and building resources. Heritage Site Flag Fen Neolithic man found this out between 4, and 3, BC when the area was first settled and farmed. Pottery dating from that era has been uncovered across the region, so distinctive in style that it has become known as Peterborough ware. The Romans landed in 43, by 47 they had taken over control of the area, with the building of a large fort at what is now Thorpe Wood Golf Course. Ferry Meadows also shows traces of Roman habitation, still visible today — at first, purely military, with the construction of two small camps and defensive ditches. But, once the troops departed, the spot became a farm instead, complete with its own temple.

Despite his talents, Calder did not originally set out to become an artist.

Restaurant menus, as we know them today, are a relatively new phenomenon. Food historians tell us they were a “byproduct” of the French Revolution. In the 20th century children’s menus take their place at the table. Before the emergence of the restaurant, a menu had always been a list of all those foods to be served during a particular meal as at a banquet today. Cookbooks recommended them and chefs in wealthy households composed them, but all the items on the menu were brought to the table in the course of the meal.

Posted on April 8, by Scott Alexander I. I have a huge bias against growth mindset. More on Wikipedia here. Social psychology has been, um, very enthusiastic about denying that result. If all growth mindset did was continue to deny it, then it would be unexceptional. But growth mindset goes further. People who believe that anyone can succeed if they try hard enough will be successful, well-adjusted, and treat life as a series of challenging adventures.

It is right smack in the middle of a bunch of fields that have all started seeming a little dubious recently. Most of the growth mindset experiments have used priming to get people in an effort-focused or an ability-focused state of mind, but recent priming experiments have famously failed to replicate and cast doubt on the entire field. And growth mindset has an obvious relationship to stereotype threat, which has also started seeming very shaky recently. So I have every reason to be both suspicious of and negatively disposed toward growth mindset.

Which makes it appalling that the studies are so damn good. Consider Dweck and Mueller , one of the key studies in the area.

Millions of dollars would be released when you forward your bank details along with current address and telephone number. They will say something like “Remember to keep this information top secret”. They actually mean to say that they don’t want you to mention their approach to the police or the writer! They like to call themselves doctor, barrister, pastor or engineer and often pretend to be women.

They write in a laughable cod legal style and love to use words like “modalities” and “fiduciary”.

Common features[ edit ] Outhouses vary in design and construction. They are by definition outside the dwelling, and are not connected to plumbing , sewer , or septic system. The World Health Organization recommends they be built a reasonable distance from the house balancing issues of easy access versus that of smell. The primary purpose of the building is for privacy and human comfort, so that the user is not exposed and does not get wet when it is raining or cold when it is windy.

Walls and a roof for privacy and to shield the user from the elements—rain, wind, sleet and snow depending on locale —and thus to a small degree, cold weather. However, the building has the secondary effect of protecting the toilet hole from large influxes of water when it is raining, which would flood the hole and flush untreated wastes into the underlying soils before they can decompose. This is especially so they can easily be moved when the earthen pit fills up.

Depending on the size of the pit and the amount of use, this can be fairly frequent, sometimes yearly. As pundit “Jackpine” Bob Cary wrote: In Western societies, many, though not all, have at least one seat with a hole in it, above a small pit. Others, often in more rural, older areas in European countries, simply have a hole with two indents on either side for your feet.
